2. How many Americans have diabetes? Of these, what percent accounts for individuals with type 1 vs. type 2? 9.3% of Americans have diabetes. Only 5 % of the diaebteic population in America have type 1 VS. 90-95% have type 2. 3. What is the function of insulin in the body? How does insulin production and use differ in type 1 vs. type 2 diabetes? Insulin directs glucose into cells so they can be used for immediate energy use or be stored for when needed. In type 1 diabetes the immune system destroys insulin- producing beta cells in the pancreas. They have to inject insulin everyday into their bodies. In type 2 diabetes they produce insulin but their cells become resistant to it. After this the pancreas then overproduces insulin. After years of this the pancreatic beta cells are exhausted and production begins to slow down and decrease. In some cases people with type 2 have to take medications or inject insulin as well.
